about

This is the audio segment of the "Fort Péninsule" A/V installation, one of four sound installations I was commissioned to create for the Festival Musique du Bout du Monde in Gaspé, Qc.

Fort Péninsule

Although we experience an endless flow of various sounds, we are conditioned to ignore them. I transform / manipulate / recycle the sounds of everyday life to re-present them in a new light in an “immerson” context (a dedicated listening environment, which focuses on exploring new perceptions and experiences of the listening process).

The Fort Péninsule Coastal Defense Battery is a vestige of the history of Gaspé and its environment during the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.

It is therefore logical that a first collaboration with local Gaspé visual artist Jonathan Desjarlais - VJ Ubiquity was created. Guided by places and history, Jonathan and I joined forces to create an site specific audio-visual installation.

Twenty-three ships were sunk during the Battle of the Atlantic. Animated by the sounds surrounding the coastal battery as well as the testimony of Mr. Fabien Sinett, I created 23 audio loops representing each of these ships and the soldiers who perished. These loops transition as
the current of the sea and the texture of these sounds has been programmed representing the anti-submarine net installed between Penouille and Sandy Beach.

Jonathan, inspired by the sea, snorkeled the bottom of the Atlantic at Penouille and Cap-des-Rosiers in order to obtain his visual material. These places have great significance and played a very important role during WWII.

We worked in the space to create an audio-visual experience suited to this beautiful place.
